Trim that fitsold walls

Finish carpentry is where a room gets its character. We install and repair baseboard, crown, casing, shelving and built-ins, scribing to walls and floors that are rarely straight, so the joints stay tight and the lines read clean.

Finish Carpentry & Trim — a real job, gently animated

Most houses in the Portland area have walls that are not quite plumb, floors that are not quite level and corners that are anything but square.

Good finish carpentry deals with that quietly.

Good finish carpentry deals with that quietly. We cope inside corners on baseboard and crown molding instead of relying on caulk, scribe trim to uneven floors, and set casing reveals evenly around doors and windows. The result is trim that looks as if it grew with the house rather than being added to it later.

Repairs are a big part of the job too. During one kitchen project, a client’s review recalls, Shawn carefully salvaged the existing crown molding while a pantry cupboard came out, so the remaining cabinets kept their original look. We match old profiles where we can, rebuild damaged sections, and replace baseboard and casing that has been chewed by pets, cracked by settling or stained by water. On older Portland homes, keeping original trim is often the better choice.

We also take on small framing and built-in projects. Another reviewer had Shawn build a wall in her home office and still gets comments on how smoothly the door closes. Closet shelving, window seats, open shelving, wainscoting and simple built-in cabinets round out the work. Triple SSS is licensed and insured under CCB #215023, and we serve Gresham, Portland, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Tigard and the towns between.

Why it matters here.

Portland’s housing stock is full of carpentry character, from Craftsman bungalows in Southeast and Northeast Portland to mid-century ranches across Gresham and Parkrose.

Much of it still has original fir trim that is worth keeping. The damp climate also means wood moves through the year, so trim installed without acclimation or proper joinery opens up after the first winter. In newer homes in Happy Valley and Damascus, upgrading thin builder-grade baseboard and casing is one of the most noticeable improvements a room can get.

Shawn did an excellent job building a wall in my office. Solid construction, and everything is so plumb that I keep getting comments on how smoothly the door closes! He arrived on time, with all supplies and tools needed.

Triple SSS Construction helped us with a couple of projects at our home to make it easier for us to age in place here. Shawn and his crew did excellent work, kept the work area clean and were respectful of our situation. We received a clear and inclusive bid within a reasonable time and the work was completed by the expected finish date.
Judi DuffyAging-in-place remodel
We had a fairly significant structural issue in the attic above our garage. Shawn performed a complete reconstruction to not only restore the roof to the original slope but he designed a new truss system that provided safe and efficient storage. His calculations were so precise that the gutters remained in place. He matched the new roofing to the existing and it looks outstanding.

How much does it cost to install baseboard or crown molding?

It depends on the length of trim, the profile and material, the number of corners and how far the walls are out of true. Painting, removing old trim and patching after removal also change the scope. We measure each room at the free estimate and give you a written price.

Can you match my old trim?

Often, yes. Many common profiles are still available, and others can be closely matched by combining stock moldings. For truly unusual historic trim, a mill may need to cut a custom profile. We look at what you have and tell you the most practical way to match it.

Can you build a wall to make a home office?

Yes, for non-structural partition walls. We frame the wall, hang and finish drywall, install a door and trim, and leave it ready for paint. New outlets, switches or lights need a licensed electrician, which we do not provide, so we plan the framing to make that part straightforward for them.

Should trim be painted or stained?

It depends on the wood and the style of the house. Painted trim suits most modern and many older homes and is easier to repair. Stained fir or oak suits Craftsman houses and anywhere the original wood is still in good shape. We can leave new trim paint-ready or finish it to match.

What is the difference between rough and finish carpentry?

Rough carpentry is the structure: framing walls, floors and roofs. Finish carpentry is everything you see afterward, such as trim, doors, shelving and built-ins, where precision and appearance matter most. We do both, which helps when a trim job uncovers framing that needs straightening first.
