Roofs builtfor Oregon rain

From October to May, a roof in the Portland area spends most days shedding rain, moss and fir needles. We repair what can be saved, replace what can’t, and tell you plainly which is which before a single shingle comes off.

Roofing — from start to finish

Triple SSS Construction is a family-owned roofing contractor in Gresham, working across Portland, Troutdale, Happy Valley and the rest of east Multnomah and Clackamas County.

Shawn comes out, gets on the roof or into the attic, and shows you photos of what he finds.

Most calls start with a leaking roof, a stain spreading across a ceiling, or a handful of missing shingles in the yard after an east-wind storm. Shawn comes out, gets on the roof or into the attic, and shows you photos of what he finds. Some roofs need a targeted roof repair; others have reached the point where a full roof replacement is the honest answer.

Our roof replacement work covers asphalt shingle roofs on houses, garages and outbuildings. We strip to the deck, replace soft or delaminated sheathing, and rebuild the details that actually keep water out: drip edge, underlayment, step and valley flashing, pipe boots, and ridge and attic ventilation. Reroofing is also the moment to fix structural problems. One review describes a sagging garage roof where old trusses had been cut for storage years earlier; Shawn designed and set new trusses, restored the original slope, and matched the new roofing to the existing.

Smaller jobs matter too. Moss damage roof repair, lifted shingles, cracked flashing at a chimney or skylight, and leaks around vents can often be handled in a single visit. We will tell you whether a repair buys real time or only delays a roof replacement in Portland weather. Every roofing estimate is free, written in plain language and broken out so you can see what you are paying for. We are licensed in Oregon under CCB #215023 and fully insured.

Why it matters here.

Portland-area roofs fail in a particular way.

The wet season runs roughly October through May, Douglas firs drop needles that hold water in the valleys, and moss grows thick on north-facing slopes. Out in Gresham, Troutdale and Corbett, the east wind coming down the Columbia Gorge peels shingles off in winter, and the occasional ice storm loads gutters and eaves. Much of the housing stock in Portland and east Multnomah County is older, with layered roofs and tired sheathing underneath. A roof detailed for these conditions, with good flashing, ventilation and sound decking, simply lasts longer here.

We had a fairly significant structural issue in the attic above our garage. Shawn performed a complete reconstruction to not only restore the roof to the original slope but he designed a new truss system that provided safe and efficient storage. His calculations were so precise that the gutters remained in place. He matched the new roofing to the existing and it looks outstanding.

How long does a roof last in Oregon?

It depends on the material, the pitch, how much shade and moss the roof sees, and how well it was ventilated and flashed. An asphalt shingle roof in full sun over a well-vented attic will outlast the same roof under firs. At the free estimate we judge your roof by its actual condition rather than its age alone.

Should I repair or replace my roof?

If the shingles are still flexible and the problem is local, such as a flashing leak or storm damage on one slope, a repair is usually the sensible choice. When leaks show up in several places, the decking is soft or the shingles are brittle and bald, replacement is better value. We show you photos and give you both options where both are honest.

How much does a roof replacement cost?

It depends on the size and pitch of the roof, how many layers have to come off, how much decking needs replacing and the shingle you choose. We do not quote from a satellite photo. We measure the roof, look in the attic and give you a written price at the free estimate.

Can you fix a roof leak in the rain?

During wet weather we can usually tarp or temporarily seal a roof leak to stop further damage, then make the permanent repair in a dry window. Call (503) 781-2093 and tell us where the water is showing up, and we will get out to you as soon as the schedule allows.

Is moss bad for my roof?

Yes, over time. Moss holds water against the shingles, lifts their edges so wind-driven rain can work underneath, and wears away the protective granules. Light moss can be cleared, but shingles that have curled or lost their surface need replacing. We tell you which stage your roof has reached when we inspect it.
